Festive Winter Walks in Oxford

Whatever your Christmas traditions, a festive walk is loved by all. A staggering 43 million people across Britain are expected to don their coats, hats and scarves this yuletide and embrace the great outdoors.

So if the kids have munched through their selection boxes, there are only orange crèmes left in the Quality Street tin and Granny is sinking the Dubonnet with gusto, bundle everyone up and get them outside for a winter stroll.

Of course you don’t have to wait until Boxing Day to get out into the fresh air, a crisp cold walk whilst wrapped up warm against the chill is one of life’s simplest pleasures!

Here are some of our favourite strolls for inspiration:

Shotover Country Park

A walk around Shotover Country Park is something of an institution on Christmas Day. You won’t be alone as Oxford flocks to this beautiful spot to take in the 117 hectares of woodland. Bring your wellies as it can be muddy and get ready to be wowed by spectacular views of South Oxford, seen from the southern slopes of Shotover Hill.

Wytham Woods

You cannot fail to be amazed at the beauty and magic of Wytham Woods, particularly in winter. The most researched area of woodland in the world, Wytham is home to a huge array of nature and wildlife. Stroll along over 32 km of footpaths and watch as the kids explore ready-made dens, spot wildlife and marvel at huge trees.

Please note that dogs are not allowed at Wytham Woods.

Boars Hill — The Dreaming Spires Walk

This beautiful stroll on Boars Hill is called ‘The Dreaming Spires Walk’ for a reason — the stunning classic Oxford views! Although this circular route feels like a big adventure, passing through fields and bridleways, it’s only 2.5 miles, so perfect for little legs. If you have guests visiting for Christmas, this is the place to bring them for picture postcard views they won’t forget.

Port Meadow

Famed for its beautiful sunsets, wild ponies and grazing cattle, Port Meadow is one of Oxford’s go-to places for a festive walk. At 440 acres, it’s one of the largest areas of common land in Oxford and offers a calm oasis despite its proximity to the city centre. Take a leisurely stroll around the meadow, head to the canal path and feed the ducks or explore Burgess Fields, the nature reserve attached. Don’t forget a pit stop at one of the nearby pubs for a winter warmer; Jacobs Inn is particularly child friendly and has pigs, chickens and naughty goats in the garden, eliciting squeals of delights from youngsters.
